Five Worst CEOs Revisited – How Many Jobs Did They Create this Labor Day?

It’s Labor Day, and a time when we naturally think about our jobs.

When it comes to jobs creation, no role is more critical than the CEO.  No company will enter into a growth phase, selling more product and expanding employment, unless the CEO agrees.  Likewise, no company will shrink, incurring job losses due to layoffs and mass firings, unless the CEO agrees.  Both decisions lay at the foot of the CEO, and it is his/her skill that determines whether a company adds jobs, or deletes them.

Over 2 years ago (5 May, 2012) I published “The 5 CEOs Who Should Be Fired.”  Not surprisingly, since then employment at all 5 of these companies has lagged economic growth, and in all but one case employment has shrunk.  Yet, 3 of these CEOs remain in their jobs – despite lackluster (and in some cases dismal) performance. And all 5 companies are facing significant struggles, if not imminent failure.

#5 – John Chambers at Cisco

In 2012 it was clear that the market shift to public networks and cloud computing was forever changing the use of network equipment which had made Cisco a modern growth story under long-term CEO Chambers.  Yet, since that time there has been no clear improvement in Cisco’s fortunes.  Despite 2 controversial reorganizations, and 3 rounds of layoffs, Cisco is no better positioned today to grow than it was before.

Increasingly, CEO Chambers’ actions reorganizations and layoffs look like so many machinations to preserve the company’s legacy rather than a clear vision of where the company will grow next.  Employee morale has declined, sales growth has lagged and although the stock has rebounded from 2012 lows, it is still at least 10% short of 2010 highs – even as the S&P hits record highs.  While his tenure began with a tremendous growth story, today Cisco is at the doorstep of losing relevancy as excitement turns to cloud service providers like Amazon.  And the decline in jobs at Cisco is just one sign of the need for new leadership.

#4 Jeff Immelt at General Electric

When CEO Immelt took over for Jack Welch he had some tough shoes to fill.  Jack Welch’s tenure marked an explosion in value creation for the last remaining original Dow Jones Industrials component company.  Revenues had grown every year, usually in double digits; profits soared, employment grew tremendously and both suppliers and investors gained as the company grew.

But that all stalled under Immelt.  GE has failed to develop even one large new market, or position itself as the kind of leading company it was under Welch.  Revenues exceeded $150B in 2009 and 2010, yet have declined since.  In 2013 revenues dropped to $142B from $145B in 2012.  To maintain revenues the company has been forced to continue selling businesses and downsizing employees every year.  Total employment in 2014 is now less than in 2012.

Yet, Mr. Immelt continues to keep his job, even though the stock has been a laggard.  From the near $60 it peaked at his arrival, the stock faltered.  It regained to $40 in 2007, only to plunge to under $10 as the CEO’s over-reliance on financial services nearly bankrupted the once great manufacturing company in the banking crash of 2009.  As the company ponders selling its long-standing trademark appliance business, the stock is still less than half its 2007 value, and under 1/3 its all time high.  Where are the jobs?  Not GE.

#3 Mike Duke at Wal-Mart

Mr. Duke has left Wal-Mart, but not in great shape.  Since 2012 the company has been rocked by scandals, as it came to light the company was most likely bribing government officials in Mexico.  Meanwhile, it has failed to defend its work practices at the National Labor Relations Board, and remains embattled regarding alleged discrimination of female employees.  The company’s employment practices are regularly the target of unions and those supporting a higher minimum wage.

The company has had 6 consecutive quarters of declining traffic, as sales per store continue to lag – demonstrating leadership’s inability to excite people to shop in their stores as growth shifts to dollar stores.  The stock was $70 in 2012, and is now only $75.60, even though the S&P 500 is up about 50%.  So far smaller format city stores have not generated much attention, and the company remains far behind leader Amazon in on-line sales.  WalMart increasingly looks like a giant trapped in its historical house, which is rapidly delapidating.

One big question to ask is who wants to work for WalMart?  In 2013 the company threatened to close all its D.C. stores if the city council put through a higher minimum wage.  Yet, since then major cities (San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, etc.) have either passed, or in the process of passing, local legislation increasing the minimum wage to anywhere from $12.50-$15.00/hour.  But there seems no response from WalMart on how it will create profits as its costs rise.

#2 Ed Lampert at Sears

Nine straight quarterly losses.  That about says it all for struggling Sears.  Since the 5/2012 column the CEO has shuttered several stores, and sales continue dropping at those that remain open.  Industry pundits now call Sears irrelevant, and the question is looming whether it will follow Radio Shack into oblivion soon.

CEO Lampert has singlehandedly destroyed the Sears brand, as well as that of its namesake products such as Kenmore and Diehard.  He has laid off thousands of employees as he consolidated stores, yet he has been unable to capture any value from the unused real estate.  Meanwhile, the leadership team has been the quintessential example of “a revolving door at headquarters.”  From about $50/share 5/2012 (well off the peak of $190 in 2007,) the stock has dropped to the mid-$30s which is about where it was in its first year of Lampert leadership (2004.)

Without a doubt, Mr. Lampert has overtaken the reigns as the worst CEO of a large, publicly traded corporation in America (now that Steve Ballmer has resigned – see next item.)

#1 Steve Ballmer at Microsoft

In 2013 Steve Ballmer resigned as CEO of Microsoft.  After being replaced, within a year he resigned as a Board member.  Both events triggered analyst enthusiasm, and the stock rose.

However, Mr. Ballmer left Microsoft in far worse condition after his decade of leadership.  Microsoft missed the market shift to mobile, over-investing in Windows 8 to shore up PC sales and buying Nokia at a premium to try and catch the market.  Unfortunately Windows 8 has not been a success, especially in mobile where it has less than 5% shareSurface tablets were written down, and now console sales are declining as gamers go mobile.

As a result the new CEO has been forced to make layoffs in all divisions – most substantially in the mobile handset (formerly Nokia) business – since I positioned Mr. Ballmer as America’s worst CEO in 2012.  Job growth appears highly unlikely at Microsoft.

CEOs – From Makers to Takers

Forbes colleague Steve Denning has written an excellent column on the transformation of CEOs from those who make businesses, to those who take from businesses.  Far too many CEOs focus on personal net worth building, making enormous compensation regardless of company performance.  Money is spent on inflated pay, stock buybacks and managing short-term earnings to maximize bonuses.  Too often immediate cost savings, such as from outsourcing, drive bad long-term decisions.

CEOs are the ones who determine how our collective national resources are invested.  The private economy, which they control, is vastly larger than any spending by the government. Harvard professor William Lazonick details how between 2003 and 2012 CEOs gave back 54% of all earnings in share buybacks (to drive up stock prices short term) and handed out another 37% in dividends.  Investors may have gained, but it’s hard to create jobs (and for a nation to prosper) when only 9% of all earnings for a decade go into building new businesses!

There are great CEOs out there.  Steve Jobs and his replacement Tim Cook increased revenues and employment dramatically at Apple.  Jeff Bezos made Amazon into an enviable growth machine, producing revenues and jobs.  These leaders are focused on doing what it takes to grow their companies, and as a result the jobs in America.

It’s just too bad the 5 fellows profiled above have done more to destroy value than create it.

Yesterday Amazon launched its new Kindle Fire smartphone.

“Ho-hum” you, and a lot of other people, said.  “Why?”  “What’s so great about this phone?”

The market is dominated by Apple and Samsung, to the point we no longer care about Blackberry – and have pretty much forgotten about all the money spent by Microsoft to buy Nokia and launch Windows 8.  The world doesn’t much need a new smartphone maker – as we’ve seen with the lack of excitement around Google/Motorola’s product launches.  And, despite some gee-whiz 3D camera and screen effects, nobody thinks Amazon has any breakthrough technology here.

But that would be completely missing the point.  Amazon probably isn’t even thinking of competing heads-up with the 2 big guns in the smartphone market.  Instead, Amazon’s target is everyone in retail.  And they should be scared to death.  As well as a lot of consumer products companies.

Apple’s iPod and iPhones have some 400,000 apps.  But most people don’t use over a dozen or so daily.  Think about what you do on your phone:

  • Talk, texting and email
  • Check the weather, road conditions, traffic
  • Listen to music, or watch videos
  • Shopping (look for products, prices, locations, specs, availability, buy)

Now, you may do several other things.  But (maybe not in priority,) these are probably the top 4 for 90% of people.

If you’re Amazon, you want people to have a great shopping experience.  A GREAT experience.  You’ve given folks terrific interfaces, across multiple platforms.  But everything you do with an app on iPhones or Samsung phones involves negotiating with Apple or Google to be in their store – and giving them revenue.  If you could bypass Apple and Google – a form of retail “middleman” in Amazon’s eyes – wouldn’t you?

Amazon has already changed retail markedly.  Twenty years ago a retailer would say success relied on 2 things:

  1. Store location and layout.  Be in the right place, and be easy to shop.
  2. Merchandise the goods well in the store, and have them available.

Amazon has killed both those tenets of retail.  With Amazon there is no store – there is no location.  There are no aisles to walk, and no shelves to stock.  There is no merchandising of products on end caps, within aisles or by tagging the product for better eye appeal.  And in 40%+ cases, Amazon doesn’t even stock the inventory.  Availability is based upon a supplier for whom Amazon provides the storefront and interface to the customer, sending the order to the supplier for a percentage of the sale.

And, on top of this, the database at Amazon can make your life even easier, and less time consuming, than a traditional store.  When you indicate you want item “A” Amazon is able to show you similar products, show you variations (such as color or size,) show you “what goes with” that product to make sure you buy everything you need, and give you different prices and delivery options.

Many retailers have spent considerably training employees to help customers in the store.  But it is rare that any retail employee can offer you the insight, advice and detail of Amazon.  For complex products, like electronics, Amazon can provide  detail on all competitive products that no traditional store could support. For home fix-ups Amazon can provide detailed information on installation, and the suite of necessary ancillary products, that surpasses what a trained Home Depot employee often can do.  And for simple products Amazon simply never runs out of stock – so no asking an aisle clerk “is there more in the back?”

And it is impossible for any brick-and-mortar retailer to match the cost structure of Amazon.  No stores, no store employees, no cashiers, 50% of the inventory, 5-10x the turns, no “obsolete inventory,” no inventory loss – there is no way any retailer can match this low cost structure. Thus we see the imminent failure of Radio Shack and Sears, and the chronic decline in mall rents as stores go empty.

Some retailers have tried to catch up with Amazon offering goods on-line.  But the inventory is less, and delivery is still often problematic.  Meanwhile, as they struggle to become more digital these retailers are competing on ground they know precious little about.  It is becoming commonplace to read about hackers stealing customer data and wreaking havoc at Michaels Stores and Target.  Thus on-line customers have far more faith in Amazon, which has 2 decades of offering secure transactions and even offers cloud services secure enough to support major corporations and parts of the U.S. government.

And Amazon, so far, hasn’t even had to make a profit.  It’s lofty price/earnings multiple of 500 indicates just how little “e” there is in its p/e.  Amazon keeps pouring money into new ways to succeed, rather than returning money to shareholders via stock buybacks or dividends.  Or dumping it into chronic store remodels, or new store construction.

Today, you could shop at Amazon from your browser on any laptop, tablet or phone.  Or, if you really enjoy shopping on-line you can now obtain a new tablet or phone from Amazon which makes your experience even better.  You can simply take a picture of something you want, and your new Amazon smartphone will tell you how to buy it on-line, including price and delivery.  No need to leave the house.  Want to see the product in full 360 degrees? You have it on your 3D phone.  And all your buying experience, customer reviews, and shopping information is right at your fingertips.

Amazon is THE game changer in retail.  Kindle was a seminal product that has almost killed book publishers, who clung way too long to old print-based business models.  Kindle Fire took direct aim at traditional retailers, from Macy’s to Wal-Mart, in an effort to push the envelope of on-line shopping.  And now the Kindle Fire smartphone puts all that shopping power in your palm, convenient with your other most commonplace uses such as messaging, fact finding, listening or viewing.

This is not a game changing smartphone in comparison with iPhone 5 or Galaxy S 5.  But, as another salvo in the ongoing war for controlling the retail marketplace this is another game changer.  It continues to help everyone think about how they shop today, and in the future.  For anyone in retail, this may well be seen as another important step toward changing the industry forever, and making “every day low prices” an obsolete (and irrelevant) retail phrase.  And for consumer goods companies this means the need to distribute products on-line will forever change the way marketing and selling is done – including who makes how much profit.

 

Be Really Glad Bezos Bought The Washington Post

Some think the recent rash of of billionaires buying newspapers is simply rich folks buying themselves trophies.  Probably true in some instances – and that benefits no one.  Just look at how Sam Zell ruined The Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times.  Or Rupert Murdoch's less than stellar performance owning The Wall Street Journal.  It's hard to be excited about a financially astute commodities manager, like John Henry, buying The Boston Globe – as it has all the earmarks of someone simply jumping in where angels fear to tread.

These companies lost their way long ago.  For decades they defined themselves as newspaper companies.  They linked everything about what they did to printing a daily paper.  The service they provided, which was a mix of hard news and entertainment reporting, was lost in the productization of that service into a print deliverable. 

So when people started to look for news and entertainment on-line, these companies chose to ignore the trend.  They continued to believe that readers would always want the product – the paper – rather than the service. And they allowed themselves to remain fixated on old processes and outdated business models long after the market shifted.

The leaders ignored the fact that advertisers could obtain much more directed placement at targets, at far lower cost, on-line than through the broad-based, general ads placed in newspapers.  And that consumers could get a much faster, and cheaper, sale via eBay, CraigsList or Vehix.com than via overpriced classified ads. 

Newspaper leadership kept trying to defend their "core" business of collecting news for daily publication in a paper format.  They kept trying to defend their local advertising base.  Even though every month more people abandoned them for an on-line format.  Not one major newspaper headmast made a strong commitment to go on-line.  None tried to be #1 in news dissemination via the web, or take a leadership role in associating ad placement with news and entertainment. 

They could have addressed the market shift, and changed their approach and delivery.  But they did not.

Money manager Mr. Henry has done a good job of turning the Boston Red Sox into a profitable institution.  But there is nothing in common between the Red Sox, for which you can grow the fan base, bring people to the ballpark and sell viewing rights, and The Boston Globe.  The former is unique.  The latter is obsolete.  Yes, the New York Times company paid $1.1B for the Globe in 1993, but that doesn't mean it's worth $70M today.  Given its revenue and cost structure, as a newspaper it is probably worth nothing.

But, we all still want news.  Nobody wants the information infrastructure collecting what we need to know to crumble.  Nobody wants journalism to die.  But it is unreasonable to expect business people to keep investing in newspapers just to fulfill a public good.  Even Mr. Zell abandoned that idea. 

Thus, we need the news, as a service, to be transformed into a new, profitable enterprise.  Somehow these organizations have to abandon the old ways of doing things, including print and paper distribution, and transform to meet modern needs.  The 6 year revenue slide at Washington Post has to stop, and instead of thinking about survival company leadership needs to focus on how to thrive with a new, profitable business model.

And that's why we all should be glad Jeff Bezos bought The Washington Post.  As head of Amazon.com  The Harvard Business Review ranked him the second best performing CEO of the last decadeCNNMoney.com named him Business Person of the Year 2012, and called him "the ultimate disruptor."

By not doing what everyone else did, breaking all the rules of traditional retail, Mr. Bezos built Amazon.com into a $61B general merchandise retailer in 20 years.  When publishers refused to create electronic books he led Amazon into competing with its suppliers by becoming a publisher.  When Microsoft wouldn't produce an e-reader, retailer and publisher Amazon.com jumped into the intensely competitive world of personal electroncs creating and launching Kindle.  And then upped the stakes against competitors by enhancing that into Kindle Fire.  And when traditional IT suppliers like HP and Dell were slow to help small (or any) business move toward cloud computing Amazon launched its own network services to help the market shift.

Mr. Bezos' language regarding his intentions post acquisition are quite telling, "change… is essential… with or without new ownership….need to invent…need to experiment." 

And that is exactly what the news industry needs today.  Today's leaders are HuffingtonPost.com, Marketwatch.com and other web sites with wildly different business models than traditional paper media.  WaPo success will require transforming a dying company, tied to an old success formula, into a trend-aligned organization that give people what they want, when they want it, at a profit.

And it's hard to think of someone better experienced, or skilled, than Jeff Bezos to provide that kind of leadership.  With just a little imagination we can imagine some rapid moves:

  • distribution of all content via Kindle style eReaders, rather than print.  Along with dramatically increasing the cost of paper subscriptions and daily paper delivery
  • Instead of a "one size fits all" general purpose daily paper, packaging news into more fitting targeted products.  Sports stories on sports sites.  Business stories on business sites.  Deeper, longer stories into ebooks available for $.99 purchase.  And repackaging of stories that cover longer time spans into electronic short-books for purchase.
  • Packaging content into Facebook locations for targeted readers.  Tying ads into these social media sites, and promoting ad sales for small, local businesses to the Facebook sites.
  • Or creating an ala carte approach to buying various news and entertainment in an iTunes or Netflix style environment (or on those sites)
  • Robustly attracting readers via connecting content with social media, including Twitter, to meet modern needs for immediacy, headline knowledge and links to deeper stories — with sales of ads onto social media
  • Tying electronic coupons, and buy-it-now capabilities to ads linked to appropriate content
  • Retargeting advertising sales from general purpose to targeted delivery at specific readers, with robust packages of on-line coupons, links to specials and fast, impulse purchase capability
  • Increased use of bloggers and ad hoc writers to supplement staff in order to offer opinions and insights quickly, but at lower cost.
  • Changes in compensation linked to page views and readership, just as revenue is linked to same.

We've watched a raft of newspapers and magazines disappear. This has not been a failure of journalism, but rather a failure of business leaders to address shifting markets and transform old organizations to meet modern needs.  It's not a quality problem, but rather a failure of strategy to adapt to shifting markets.  And that's a lesson every business leaders needs to note, because today, as I wrote in April, 2012, every company has to behave like a tech company!

Doing more of the same, cutting costs and rich egos won't fix a newspaper.  Only the willingness to experiment and find new solutions which transform these organizations into something very different, well beyond print, will work.  Let's hope Mr. Bezos brings the same zest for addressing these challenges and aligning with market needs he brought to Amazon.  To a large extent, the future of news and "freedom of the press" may well depend upon it.

 

Why Jeff Bezos is our greatest living CEO

The Harvard Business Review recently published its list of the 100 Best Performing CEOs.  This list is better than most because it looks at long-term performance of the CEO during his or her time in the job – with many on the list in service more than a decade.

#1 was Steve Jobs.  #2 is Jeff Bezos – making him the greatest living CEO.  It is startling just how well these two CEOs performed.  During Jobs' tenure Apple investors achieved a return of 66.8 times their money.  During Mr. Bezos' tenure shareholders achieved a remarkable 124.3 times return on their money.  In an era when most of us are happy to earn 5-10%/year – which equates to doubling your money about once a decade – these CEOs exceeded expectations 30-60 fold!

Both of these CEOs achieved greatness by transforming an industry.  We all know the Apple story.  From near bankruptcy as the Mac company Mr. Jobs led Apple into the mobile devices business, and created a transformation from Walkmen, Razrs and PCs to iPods, iPhones and iPads – to the detriment of Sony, Motorola, Nokia, Microsoft, HP and Dell. 

The Amazon story is all the more remarkable because it has been written in the far more mundane world of retail – not known for being nearly as fast-changing at tech.

Lest we forget, Amazon started as an on-line seller of books frequently unavailable at your local bookstore.  "What's a local bookstore?" you may now ask, because through continuous upgrading of its capability to build on the advances in internet usage – across machines, browsers, wi-fi and mobile – Amazon drove into bankruptcy such large booksellers as B.Dalton and Borders – leaving Barnes & Noble a mere shell of its former self and on tenous footing.  And the number of small bookshops has dropped dramatically.

But Amazon's industry transformation has gone far beyond bookselling.  Amazon was one of the first, and by most users considered the best, at offering a complete on-line storefront for any retailer who wants to sell goods through Amazon's site.  You can set up your inventory, display products, provide user information, manage a shopping cart and handle check out all through Amazon – with minimal technical skill.  This allowed Amazon to bring vastly more products to customers; and without adding all the inventory or warehousing cost.

As digital uses grew, Amazon moved beyond the slow-paced publishers to launch the Kindle and give us eReaders displacing paper books and periodicals.  But this was just the first salvo in the effort to promote additional on-line buying, as Amazon next launched Kindle Fire which at remarkably low cost gave people a tablet already set up for doing retail shopping at Amazon.

As Amazon launched its book downloads and on-line services, it built its own cloud services business to aid businesses and people in using tablets, and doing more things on-line; which further reinforced the digital retail world in which Amazon dominates.

And make no doubt about it, Kindle Fire – and the use of all other tablets – is the WalMart and other traditional brick-and-mortar retail killer.  Amazon is now a player in all pieces of the transition which is happening in retail, from traditional shopping to on-line. 

Demand for retail space in the USA began declining in 2009 and has not stopped.  Most analysts blamed it on the great recession.  But in retrospect we can now see it was the watershed year for customers to begin looking more, and buying more, on-line.  Now each year growth in on-line retail continues, while demand at traditional stores wanes.

Just look at this last holiday season.  To (hopefully) drive revenue stores were opening on Thanksgiving, and doing 24 and 48 hours of non-stop staffing and promotions to drive sales.  But it was mostly in vain, as traditional retail saw almost no gains.  Despite doing more and more of what they've always done – trying to be better, faster and cheaper – they simply could not change the trend away from shopping on-line and back into the stores.

For the last year the #1 trend in retailing has been "showrooming" where customers stand in a store with a smartphone comparison pricing on-line (most frequently Amazon) to the product on the shelf.  Retailers were forced to match on-line prices, despite their higher overhead, or lose the business.  And now Target has implemented a policy of price-matching Amazon for all of 2013 in hopes of slowing the trend to on-line purchasing.

Circuit City went bankrupt, which saved Best Buy as it picked up their lost business.  But now Best Buy is close to failure.  Same store sales at WalMart have been flat.  JCPenney recruited Apple's retail store wizard as CEO – but he's learned when you have to compete with Amazon life simply sucks.  Nobody in traditional retail has found a way to reverse the on-line shopping trend, which is still dominated by Amazon.

We all can learn from these two CEOs and the companies they built.  First, and foremost, is understand trends and align with them.  If you help people move in the direction they want to go life is easy, and growth can be phenomenal.  Trying to slow, stop or reverse a trend doesn't work, and is expensive. 

Second, don't ask customers what they want, instead give them what they need.  Customers may be on a trend, but they will frame their requests in the old paradigm.  By creating new trend-promoting products and solutions you can capture the customer and avoid head-to-head competition with the "old guard" titans selling the increasingly outdated solutions.  Don't build better brick-and-mortar, make brick-and-mortar obsolete.

So, what's stopping you from growing your business like Apple or Amazon?  What keeps you from being the next Steve Jobs, or Jeff Bezos?  Can you spot trends and provide trend-supporting solutions for customers?  Or are you stymied because you're spending too much time trying to defend and extend your old business in the face of game changing trends.

How Amazon Whupped Facebook Last Week

It's been two very different stories for Amazon and Facebook this summer.  Amazon's market cap has risen about 20%, while Facebook lost about 50% of its market value

Why this has happened was somewhat encapsulated in each company's headlines last week.

Amazon announced it was releasing 2 new eReaders under the Paperwhite name requiring no external light source starting at $119.  Additionally, Kindles for $69 will be available this week.  These actions expand the market for eReaders, already dominated by Amazon, providing for additional growth and lowering a kaboom on the Barnes & Noble Nook which is partnered with Microsoft. 

Offering more functionality and lower prices gives Amazon an even larger lead in the ereader market while simultaneously expanding demand for digital reading giving Amazon more strength versus traditional publishers and the printed book market.  Despite a "nosebleed" high historical price/earnings multiple close to 300, investors, like customers, were charged up to see the opportunities for ongoing growth from new products.

On the other hand, Facebook spent last week explaining to investors a set of decisions being made to prop up the stock price.  The CEO promised not to sell any stock for several months, and explained that the company would not sell more stock to cover taxes on stock-based compensation – even though that was the original plan.  He even tried to promote the avoided transaction as some kind of stock buyback, although there was no stock buyback

Facebook was focused on financial machinations – which have nothing to do with growing the company's revenues or profits.  That the company avoided selling more stock at its deflated prices does help earnings per share, but what's more important is the fact that now $2B will be taken out of cash reserves to pay those taxes.  $2B which won't be spent on new product development, or other activities oriented toward growth. 

Although I am very bullish on Facebook, last week was not a good sign.  A young CEO is clearly feeling heat over the stock value, even though he has control of the company regardless of share price.  It gave the indication that he wanted to mollify investors rather than focus on producing better results – which is what Facebook has to do if it really wants to make investors happy.  Rather than doing what he always promised to do, which was make the world's best network offering users the best experience, his attention was diverted to issues that have absolutely no long-term value, and in the short term reduce resources for fulfilling the long-term mission.

Given the choice between

  1.  a company talking about how it plans to grow revenues and profits, and maintain market domination while outflanking the introduction of new Microsoft products, or
  2. a company apologetic about its IPO, fixated on its declining stock price and apparently diverting focus away from markets and solutions toward financial machinations

which would you choose?  Both may have gone up in value last week – but clearly Mr. Bezos showed he was leading his company, while Mr. Zuckerberg came off looking like he was floundering.

As you look at the announcements from your company, over the last year and anticipate going forward, what do you see?  Are there lots of announcements about new technology applications and product advancements that open new markets for growing revenue while warding off (and making outdated) competitors?  Or is more time spent talking about layoffs, cost cutting efforts, price adjustments to maintain market share, stock buybacks intended to prop up the value, stock (or company) splits, asset (or division) sales, expense reductions, reorganizations or adjustments intended to improve earnings per share? 

If its the former, congratulations! You're acting like Amazon.  You're talking about how you are whupping competitors and creating growth for investors, employees and suppliers.  But if it's the latter perhaps you understand why your equity value isn't rising, employees are disgruntled and suppliers are worried.
