Why EPS and Share Price Don’t Predict Future Performance

Most analysts, and especially “chartists,” put a lot of emphasis on earnings per share (EPS) and stock price movements when determining whether to buy a stock.  Unfortunately, these are not good predictors of company performance, and investors should beware.

Most analysts are focused on short-term, meaning quarter-to-quarter, performance.  Their idea of long-term is looking back 1 year, comparing this quarter to same quarter last year.  As a result, they fixate on how EPS has done, and will talk about whether improvements in EPS will cause the “multiple” (meaning stock price divided by EPS) will “expand.”  They forecast stock price based upon future EPS times the industry multiple.  If EPS is growing, they expect the stock to trade at the industry multple, or possibly somewhat better.  Grow EPS, hope to grow the multiple, and project a higher valuation.

Analysts will also discuss the “momentum” (meaning direction and volume) of a stock. They look at charts, usually less than one year, and if price is going up they will say the momentum is good for a higher price.  They determine the “strength of momentum” by looking at trading volume.  Movements up or down on high volume are considered more meaningful than on low volume.

But, unfortunately, these indicators are purely short-term, and are easily manipulated so that they do not reflect the actual performance of the company.

At any given time, a CEO can decide to sell assets and use that cash to buy shares.  For example, McDonald’s sold Chipotle and Boston Market.  Then leadership took a big chunk of that money and repurchased company shares.  That meant McDonalds took its two fastest growing, and highest value, assets and sold them for short-term cash.  They traded growth for cash.  Then leadership spent that cash to buy shares, rather than invest in in another growth vehicle.

buying your own stockThis is where short-term manipulation happens.  Say a company is earning $1,000 and has 1,000 shares outstanding, so its EPS is $1.  The industry multiple is 10, so the share price is $10.  The company sells assets for $1,000 (for purposes of this exercise, let’s assume the book value on those assets is $1,000 so there is no gain, no earnings impact and no tax impact.)

Company leadership says its shares are undervalued, so to help out shareholders it will “return the money to shareholders via a share repurchase” (note, it is not giving money to shareholders, just buying shares.  $1,000 buys 100 shares.  The number of shares outstanding now falls to 900.  Earnings are still $1,000 (flat, no gain,) but dividing $1,000 by 900 now creates an EPS of $1.11 – a greater than 10% gain!  Using the same industry multiple, the analysts now say the stock is worth $1.11 x 10 = $11.10!

Even though the company is smaller, and has weaker growth prospects, somehow this “refocusing” of the company on its “core” business and cutting extraneous noise (and growth opportunities) has led to a price increase.

Worse, the company hires a very good investment banker to manage this share repurchase.  The investment banker watches stock buys and sells, and any time he sees the stock starting to soften he jumps in and buys some shares, so that momentum remains strong.  As time goes by, and the repurchase program is not completed, selectively he will make large purchases on light trading days, thus adding to the stock’s price momentum.

The analysts look at these momentum indicators, now driven by the share repurchase program, and deem the momentum to be strong.  “Investors love the stock” the analysts say (even though the marginal investors making the momentum strong are really company management) and start recommending to investors they should anticipate this company achieving a multiple of 11 based on earnings and stock momentum.  The price now goes to $1.11 x 11 = $12.21.

Yet the underlying company is no stronger.  In fact one could make the case it is weaker.  But, due to the higher EPS, better multiple and higher share price the CEO and her team are rewarded with outsized multi-million dollar bonuses.

But, companies the last several years did not even have to sell assets to undertake this kind of manipulation.  They could just spend cash from earnings. Earnings have been at record highs, and growing, for several years.  Yet most company leaders have not reinvested those earnings in plant, equipment or even people to drive further growth.  Instead they have built huge cash hoards, and then spent that cash on share buybacks – creating the EPS/Multiple expansion – and higher valuations – described above.

This has been so successful that in the last quarter untethered corporations have spent $238B on buybacks, while earning only $228B.  The short-term benefits are like corporate crack, and companies are spending all the money they have on buybacks rather than reinvesting in growth.

Where does the extra money originate?  Many companies have borrowed money to undertake buybacks. Corporate interest rates have been at generational (if not multi-generational) lows for several years.  Interest rates were kept low by the Federal Reserve hoping to spur borrowing and reinvestment in new products, plant, etc to drive economic growth, more jobs and higher wages.  The goal was to encourage companies to take on more debt, and its associated risk, in order to generate higher future revenues.

Many companies have chosen to borrow money, but rather than investing in growth projects they have bought shares.  They borrow money at 2-3%, then buy shares – which can have a much higher immediate impact on valuation – and drive up executive compensation.

This has been wildly prevalent. Since the Fed started its low-interest policy it has added $2.37trillion in cash to the economy. Corporate buybacks have totaled $2.41trillion.

This is why a company can actually have a crummy business, and look ill-positioned for the future, yet have growing EPS and stock price.  For example, McDonald’s has gone through rounds of store closures since 2005, sold major assets, now has more stores closing than opening, and has its largest franchisees despondent over future prospects.  Yet, the stock has tripled since 2005!  Leadership has greatly weakened the company, put it into a growth stall (since 2012,) and yet its value has gone up!

Microsoft has seen its “core” PC market shrink, had terrible new product launches of Vista and Windows 8, wholly failed to succeed with a successful mobile device, written off billions in failed acquisitions, and consistently lost money in its gaming division.  Yet, in the last 10 years it has seen EPS grow and its share price double through the power of share buybacks from its enormous cash hoard and ability to grow debt.  While it is undoubtedly true that 10 years ago Microsoft was far stronger, as a PC monopolist, than it is today – its value today is now higher.

Share buybacks can go on for several years. Especially in big companies.  But they add no value to a company, and if not exceeded by re-investments in growth markets they weaken the company.  Long term a company’s value will relate to its ability to grow revenues, and real profits.  If a company does not have a viable, competitive business model with real revenue growth prospects, it cannot survive.

Look no further than HP, which has had massive buybacks but is today worth only what it was worth 10 years ago as it prepares to split.  Or Sears Holdings which is now worth 15% of its value a decade ago.  Short term manipulative actions can fool any investor, and actually artificially keep stock prices high, so make sure you understand the long-term revenue trends, and prospects, of any investment.  Regardless of analyst recommendations.

Hewlett Packard is splitting in two.  Do you find yourself wondering why?  You aren’t alone.

Hewlett Packard is nearly 75 years old.  One of the original “silicone valley companies,” it started making equipment for engineers and electronic technicians long before computers were every day products.  Over time HP’s addition of products like engineering calculators moved it toward more consumer products.  And eventually HP became a dominant player in printers.  All of these products were born out of deep skills in R&D, engineering and product development.  HP had advantages because its products were highly desirable and unique, which made it nicely profitable.

But along came a CEO named Carly Fiorina, and she decided HP needed to grow much bigger, much more quickly.  So she bought Compaq, which itself had bought Digital Equipment, so HP could sell Wintel PCs.  PCs were a product in which HP had no advantage. PC production had always been an assembly operation of other companies’ intellectual property.  It had been a very low margin, brutally difficult place to grow unless one focused on cost lowering rather than developing intellectual capital.  It had nothing in common with HP’s business.

To fight this new margin battle HP replaced Ms. Fiorina with Mark Hurd, who recognized the issues in PC manufacturing and proceeded to gut R&D, product development and almost every other function in order to push HP into a lower cost structure so it could compete with Dell, Acer and other companies that had no R&D and cultures based on cost controls.  This led to internal culture conflicts, much organizational angst and eventually the ousting of Mr. Hurd.

But, by that time HP was a company adrift with no clear business model to help it have a sustainably profitable future.

Now HP is 4 years into its 5 year turnaround plan under Meg Whitman’s leadership.  This plan has made HP much smaller, as layoffs have dominated the implementation.  It has weakened the HP brand as no important new products have been launched, and the gutted product development capability is still no closer to being re-established.  And PC sales have stagnated as mobile devices have taken center stage – with HP notably weak in mobile products.  The company has drifted, getting no better and showing no signs of re-developing its historical strengths.

So now HP will split into two different companies.  Following the old adage “if you can’t dazzle ’em with brilliance, baffle ’em with bulls**t.”  When all else fails, and you don’t know how to actually lead a company, then split it into pieces, push off the parts to others to manage and keep at least one CEO role for yourself.

Let’s not forget how this mess was created.  It was a former CEO who decided to expand the company into an entirely different and lower margin business where the company had no advantage and the wrong business model.  And another that destroyed long-term strengths in innovation to increase short-term margins in a generic competition.  And then yet a third who could not find any solution to sustainability while pushing through successive rounds of lay-offs.

This was all value destruction created by the persons at the top.  “Strategic” decisions made which, inevitably, hurt the organization more than helped it.  Poorly thought through actions which have had long-term deleterious repercussions for employees, suppliers, investors and the communities in which the businesses operate.

The game of musical chairs has been very good for the CEOs who controlled the music.  They were paid well, and received golden handshakes.  They, and their closest reports, did just fine.  But everyone else….. well…..

Out with a Whimper – HP, B of A, Alcoa and the DJIA

This week the people who decide what composes the Dow Jones Industrial Average booted off 3 companies and added 3 others.  What's remarkable is how little most people cared!

"The Dow," as it is often called, is intended to represent the core of America's economy.  "As the Dow goes, so goes America" is the theory.  It is one of the most watched indices of all markets, with many people tracking how much it goes up, or down, every trading day.  So being a component of the DJIA is a pretty big deal.

It's not a good day when you find out your company has been removed from the index.  Because it is a very public statement that your company simply isn't all that important any more.  Certainly not as important as it once was!  Your relevance, once considered core to representing the economy, has dissipated.  And, unfortunately, most companies that fall off the DJIA slip away into oblivion.

I have a simple test.  Do like Jay Leno, of Tonight Show fame, and simply ask a dozen college graduates that are between 26 and 31 about a company.  If they know that company, and are positively influenced by it, you have relevancy.  If they don't care about that company then the CEO and Board should take note, because it is an early indicator that the company may well have lost relevancy and is probably in more trouble than the leaders want to admit.

Ask these folks about Alcoa (AA) and what do you imagine the typical response?  "Alcoa?"  It is a rare person under 40 who knows that Alcoa was once the king of aluminum — back when we wrapped food in "tin foil" and before we all drank sodas and beer from a can.  To most, "Alcoa" is a random set of letters with no meaning – like Altria – rather than its origin as ALuminum COrporation of America. 

But, its not even the largest aluminum company any more.  Alcoa is now 3rd.  In a world where we live on smartphones and tablets, who really cares about a mining company that deals in commodities?  Especially the third largest with no growth prospects?

Speaking of smartphones, Hewlett Packard (HPQ) was recently considered a bellweather of the tech industry.  An early innovator in test equipment, it was one of the original "Silicon Valley" companies.  But its commitment to printers has left people caring little about the company's products, since everyone prints less and less as we read more and more off digital screens. 

Past-CEO Fiorina's huge investment in PCs by buying Compaq (which previously bought minicomputer maker DEC,) committed the rest of HP into what is now one of the fastest shrinking markets.  And in PCs, HP doesn't even have any technology roots.  HP is just an assembler, mostly offshore, as its products are all based on outsourced chip and software technology. 

What a few years ago was considered a leader in technology has become a company that the younger crowd identifies with technology products they rarely use, and never buy.  And lacking any sort of exciting pipeline, nobody really cares about HP.

Bank of America (BAC) was one of the 2 leaders in financial services when it entered the DJIA.  It was a powerhouse in all things banking.  But, as the mortgage market disintegrated B of A rapidly fell into trouble.  It's shotgun wedding with Merrill Lynch to save the investment bank from failure made the B of A bigger, but not stronger. 

Now racked with concerns about any part of the institution having long-term success against larger, and better capitalized, banks in America and offshore has left B of A with a lot of branches, but no market leadership.  What innovations B of A may have had in lending or derivatives are now considered headaches most people either don't understand, or largely despise.

These 3 companies were once great lions of their industries.  And they were rewarded with placement on the DJIA as icons of the economy.  But they now leave with a whimper. Their values so shredded that their departure makes almost no impact on calculating the DJIA using the remaining companies.  (Note: the DJIA calculation was significantly impacted by the addition of much higher valued companies Nike, Goldman Sachs and Visa.)

If we look at some past examples of other companies removed from the DJIA, one should be skeptical about the long-term future for these three:

  • 2009 – GM removed due to bankruptcy
  • 2004 – AT&T and Kodak removed (both ended up in bankruptcy)
  • 1999 – Goodyear, Union Carbide, Sears
  • 1997 – Westinghouse, Woolworths
  • 1991 – American Can, Navistar/International Harvester

Any company can lose relevancy.  Markets shift.  There is risk incurred by focusing on the status quo (Status Quo Risk.) New technology, regulations, competitors, business practices — innovations of all sorts — enter the market daily.  Being really good at something, in fact being the worlds BEST at something, does not insure success or longevity (despite the popularity of In Search of Excellence). 

When markets shift, and your company doesn't, you can find yourself without relevancy.  And with a fast declining value.  Whether you are iconic – or not.

Microsoft ReOrg – Crafty or Confusing?

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer appears to be planning a major reorganization. The apparent objective is to help the company move toward becoming a "devices and services company" as presented in the company's annual shareholder letter last October. 

But, the question for investors is whether this is a crafty move that will help Microsoft launch renewed profitable growth, or is it leadership further confusing customers and analysts while leaving Microsoft languishing in stalled markets?  After all, the shares are up some 31% the last 6 months and it is a good time to decide if an investor should buy, hold or sell.

There are a lot of things not going well for Microsoft right now.

Everyone knows PC sales have started dropping.  IDC recently lowered its forecast for 2013 from a decline of 1.3% to negative 7.8%.  The mobile market is already larger than PC sales, and IDC now expects tablet sales (excluding smartphones) will surpass PCs in 2015.  Because the PC is Microsoft's "core" market – producing almost all the company's profitability – declining sales are not a good thing.

Microsoft hoped Windows 8 would reverse the trend.  That has not happened.  Unfortunately, ever since being launched Windows 8 has underperformed the horrific sales of Vista.  Eight months into the new product it is selling at about half the rate Vista did back in 2007 – which was the worst launch in company history.  Win8 still has fewer users than Vista, and at 4% share 1/10th the share of market leaders Windows 7 and XP. 

Microsoft is launching an update to Windows 8, called Windows 8.1 or "blue."  But rather than offering a slew of new features to please an admiring audience the release looks more like an early "fix" of things users simply don't like, such as bringing back the old "start" button.  Reviewers aren't talking about how exciting the update is, but rather wondering if these admissions of poor initial design will slow conversion to tablets.

And tablets are still the market where Microsoft isn't – even if it did pioneer the product years before the iPad. Bloomberg reported that Microsoft has been forced to cut the price of RT.  So far historical partners such as HP and HTC have shunned Windows tablets, leaving Acer the lone company putting out Windows a mini-tab, and Dell (itself struggling with its efforts to go private) the only company declaring a commitment to future products.

And whether it's too late for mobile Windows is very much a real question.  At the last shareholder meeting Nokia's investors cried loud and hard for management to abandon its commitment to Microsoft in favor of returning to old operating systems or moving forward with Android.  This many years into the game, and with the Google and Apple ecosystems so far in the lead, Microsoft needed a game changer if it was to grab substantial share.  But Win 8 has not proven to be a game changer.

In an effort to develop its own e-reader market Microsoft dumped some $300million into Barnes & Noble's Nook last year.  But the e-reader market is fast disappearing as it is overtaken by more general-purpose tablets such as the Kindle Fire.  Yet, Microsoft appears to be pushing good money after bad by upping its investment by another $1B to buy the rest of Nook, apparently hoping to obtain enough content to keep the market alive when Barnes & Noble goes the way of Borders.  But chasing content this late, behind Amazon, Apple and Google, is going to be much more costly than $1B – and an even lower probability than winning in hardware or software.

Then there's the new Microsoft Office.  In late May Microsoft leadership hoped investors would be charmed to hear that 1M $99 subscriptions had been sold in 3.5 months.  However, that was to an installed base of hundreds of millions of PCs – a less than thrilling adoption rate for such a widely used product.  Companies that reached 1M subscribers from a standing (no installed base) start include Instagram in 2.5 months, Spotify in 5 months, Dropbox in 7 months and Facebook (which pioneered an entire new marketplace in Social) in only 10 months.  One could have easily expected a much better launch for a product already so widely used, and offered at about a third the price of previous licenses.

A new xBox was launched on May 21st.  Unfortunately, like all digital markets gaming is moving increasingly mobile, and consoles show all the signs of going the way of desktop computers.  Microsoft hopes xBox can become the hub of the family room, but we're now in a market where a quarter of homes lead by people under 50 don't really use "the family room" any longer. 

xBox might have had a future as an enterprise networking hub, but so far Kinnect has not even been marketed as a tool for business, and it has not yet incorporated the full network functionality (such as Skype) necessary to succeed at creating this new market against competitors like Cisco. 

Thankfully, after more than a decade losing money, xBox reached break-even recently.  However, margins are only 15%, compared to historical Microsoft margins of 60% in "core" products.  It would take a major growth in gaming, plus a big market share gain, for Microsoft to hope to replace lost PC profits with xBox sales.  Microsoft has alluded to xBox being the next iTunes, but lacking mobility, or any other game changer, it is very hard to see how that claim holds water.

The Microsoft re-org has highlighted 3 new divisions focused on servers and tools, Skype/Lync and xBox.  What is to happen with the business which has driven three decades of Microsoft growth – operating systems and office software – is, well, unclear.  How upping the focus on these three businesses, so late in the market cycle, and with such low profitability will re-invigorate Microsoft's value is, well, unclear. 

In fact, given how Microsoft has historically made money it is wholly unclear what being a "devices and services" company means.  And this re-organization does nothing to make it clear. 

My past columns on Microsoft have led some commenters to call me a "Microsoft hater."  That is not true.  More apt would be to say I am a Microsoft bear.  Its historical core market is shrinking, and Microsoft's leadership invested far too much developing new products for that market in hopes the decline would be delayed – which did not work.  By trying to defend and extend the PC world Microsoft's leaders chose to ignore the growing mobile market (smartphones and tablets) until far too late – and with products which were not game changers. 

Although Microsoft's leaders invested heavily in acquisitions and other markets (Skype, Nook, xBox recently) those very large investments came far too late, and did little to change markets in Microsoft's favor. None of these have created much excitement, and recently Rick Sherland at Nomura securities came out with a prediction that Microsoft might well sell the xBox division (a call I made in this column back in January.)

As consumers, suppliers and investors we like the idea of a near-monopoly.  It gives us comfort to believe we can trust in a market leader to bring out new products upon which we can rely – and which will continue to make long-term profits.  But, good as this feels, it has rarely been successful.  Markets shift, and historical leaders fall as new competitors emerge; largely because the old leadership continues investing in what they know rather than shifting investments early into new markets.

This Microsoft reorganization appears to be rearranging the chairs on the Titanic.  The mobile iceberg has slashed a huge gash in Microsoft's PC hull.  Leadership keeps playing familiar songs, but the boat cannot float without those historical PC profits. Investors would be smart to flee in the lifeboat of recent share price gains. 

Sorry Meg, Your Hockey Stick Forecast for HP Won’t Happen – Sell

If you're still an investor in Hewlett Packard you must be new to this blog.  But for those who remain optimistic, it is worth reveiwing why Ms. Whitman's forecast for HP yesterday won't happen.  There are sound reasons why the company has lost 35% of its value since she took over as CEO, over 75% since just 2010 – and over $90B of value from its peak.

I recall my father pointing to a large elm tree when I was a boy and saying "that tree will be dead in under 2 years, we might as well cut it down now."  "But it's huge, and has leaves" I said. "It doesn't look dead."  "It's not dead yet, but the environmental wind damage has cost it too many branches,  the changing creek direction created standing water rotting its roots, and neighboring trees have grown taking away its sunshine.  That tree simply won't survive.  I know it's more than 3 stories tall, with a giant trunk, and you can't tell it now – but it is already dead." 

To teach me the lesson, he decided not to cut the tree.  And the following spring it barely leafed out.  By fall, it was clearly losing bark, and well into demise.  We cut it for firewood.

Such is the situation at HP.  Before she became CEO (but while she was a Director – so she doesn't escape culpability for the situation) previous leaders made bad decisions that pushed HP in the wrong direction:

  • Carly Fiorina, alone, probably killed HP with the single decision to buy Compaq and gut the HP R&D budget to implement a cost-based, generic strategy for competing in Windows-based PCs.  She sucked most of the money out of the wildly profitable printer business to subsidize the transition, and destroy any long-term HP value.
  • Mark Hurd furthered this disaster by further investing in cost-cutting to promote "scale efficiencies" and price reductions in PCs.  Instead of converting software products and data centers into profitable support products for clients shifting to software-as-a-service (SAAS) or cloud services he closed them – to "focus" on the stagnating, profit-eroding PC business.
  • His ill-conceived notion of buying EDS to compete in traditional IT services long after the market had demonstrated a major shift offshore, and declining margins, created an $8B write-off last year; almost 60% of the purchase price.  Giving HP another big, uncompetitive business unit in a lousy market.
  • His purchase of Palm for $1.2B was a ridiculous price for a business that was once an early leader, but had nothing left to offer customers (sort of like RIM today.)  HP used Palm to  bring out a Touchpad tablet, but it was so late and lacking apps that the product was recalled from retailers after only 49 days. Another write-off.
  • Leo Apotheker bought a small Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software company – only more than a decade after monster competitors Oracle, SAP and IBM had encircled the market.  Further, customers are now looking past ERP for alternatives to the inflexible "enterprise apps" which hinder their ability to adjust quickly in today's rapidly changing marektplace.  The ERP business is sure to shrink, not grow.

Whitman's "Turnaround Plan" simply won't work

Meg is projecting a classic "hockey stick" performance.  She plans for revenues and profits to decline for another year or two, then magically start growing again in 3  years.  There's a reason "hockey stick" projections don't happen.  They imply the company is going to get a lot better, and competitors won't.  And that's not how the world works.

Let's see, what will likely happen over the next 3 years from technology advances by industry leaders Apple, Android and others?  They aren't standing still, and there's no reason to believe HP will suddenly develop some fantastic mojo to become a new product innovator, leapfrogging them for new markets. 

  1. Meg's first action is cost cutting – to "fix" HP.  Cutting 29,000 additional jobs won't fix anything.  It just eliminates a bunch of potentially good idea generators who would like to grow the company.  When Meg says this is sure to reduce the number of products, revenues and profits in 2013 we can believe that projection fully.
  2. Adding features like scanning and copying to printers will make no difference to sales.  The proliferation of smart devices increasingly means people don't print.  Just like we don't carry newspapers or magazines, we don't want to carry memos or presentations.  The world is going digital (duh) and printing demand is not going to grow as we read things on smartphones and tablets instead of paper.
  3. HP is not going to chase the smartphone business.  Although it is growing rapidly.  Given how late HP is to market, this is probably not a bad idea.  But it begs the question of how HP plans to grow.
  4. HP is going not going to exit PCs.  Too bad.  Maybe Lenovo or Dell would pay up for this dying business.  Holding onto it will do HP no good, costing even more money when HP tries to remain competitive as sales fall and margins evaporate due to overcapacity leading to price wars.
  5. HP will launch a Windows8 tablet in January targeted at "enterprises."  Given the success of the iPad, Samsung Galaxy and Amazon Kindle products exactly how HP will differentiate for enterprise success is far from clear.  And entering the market so late, with an unproven operating system platform is betting the market on Microsoft making it a success.  That is far, far from a low-risk bet.  We could well see this new tablet about as successful as the ill-fated Touchpad.
  6. Ms. Whitman is betting HP's future (remember, 3 years from now) on "cloud" computing.  Oh boy.  That is sort of like when WalMart told us their future growth would be "China."  She did not describe what HP was going to do differently, or far superior, to unseat companies already providing a raft of successful, growing, profitable cloud services.  "Cloud" is not an untapped market, with companies like Oracle, IBM, VMWare, Salesforce.com, NetApp and EMC (not to mention Apple and Amazon) already well entrenched, investing heavily, launching new products and gathering customers.

Ms. Whitman said that the biggest problem at HP has been executive turnover.  That is not quite right.  The problem is HP has had a string of really TERRIBLE CEOs that have moved the company in the wrong direction, invested horribly in outdated strategies, ignored market shifts and assumed that size alone would keep HP successful.  In a bygone era all of them – from Carly Fiorina to Mark Hurd to Leo Apotheker – would have been flogged in the Palo Alto public center then placed in stocks so employees (former and current) could hurl fruit and vegetables, or shout obscenities, at them!

Unfortately, Ms. Whitman is sure to join this ignominious list.  Her hockey stick projection will not occur; cannot given her strategy. 

HP's only hope is to sell the PC business, radically de-invest in printers and move rapidly into entirely new markets.  Like Steve Jobs did a dozen years ago when he cut Mac spending to invest in mobile technologies and transform Apple.  Meg's faith in operational improvement, commitment to existing "enterprise" markets and Microsoft technology assures HP, and its investors, a decidedly unpleasant future.
